Loaves and Fish: How I Got My First Agent
Getting signed with an agent is one of the most important, beneficial steps in getting started as a professional actor. There have been some amazing projects that I've worked on in the past year that I certainly would have missed out on if I didn't have such a great agent. I'd like to share with you all the story of how I signed with her and the lessons I learned along the way.
In Matthew 14:15-21 (NIV), it says that there was a very large crowd that followed Jesus and his disciples near the Sea of Galilee. He had compassion for them and spent a long time healing the people who were sick:
"As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said,
'This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.'
Jesus replied, 'They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.'
'We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,' they answered.
'Bring them here to me,' he said.
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children."
The disciples' response to Jesus was really interesting... Did you catch it? When Jesus told the disciples to give the people something to eat, they responded with, "we have here only five loaves of bread and two fish." The disciples must have known that realistically there was no way five loaves and two fish could feed five thousand men (let alone all of the women and children who weren't included in that count!) But God had a plan to use this opportunity to show off his glory.
When I was a senior at Liberty University (with no credits, no experience, and no knowledge of how the industry worked), I decided to apply for agencies in the Southeast. I had one resume- mostly filled with university theatre credits, and I had one reel- a complete disaster! I didn't even speak in it! Looking back on it, it was truly a miracle that Misty reached out to me and told me that she wanted to schedule an interview.
Advantage is a perfect fit for me. Strong foundation of faith. Nashville-based. SAG-franchised... There is no way I could have planned it better myself.
That's how God works. When we step out in faith and offer what we have to him in this moment, he can do more things than we could ask or imagine! That way, he can get all the glory!
How many times do I feel like I need to get everything together, work harder, or prepare more before I can give God what I have? The story of Jesus feeding the 5000 reminds me that if I offer him what I have right now - even if it doesn't seem like much - he is able to take it, bless it, multiply it, and make a miracle out of it.
If you are keeping yourself from fully offering yourself to the Lord out of fear of "not being enough" or "not being ready" or "if-I-could-just-do-x-then-I'll-do-y"... I would encourage you to stop and offer yourself to the Lord as you are. Today. Watch and see what miracles God will do!!!
